The Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program, or CTPAT, is a key component of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) cargo enforcement strategy. Its goal is to strengthen international supply chains while maintaining U.S. border security.
Through CTPAT, CBP partners with a variety of freight and logistics entities—such as freight forwarders, customs brokers, and importers. The program is voluntary and fosters stronger public-private partnerships in international trade. Participating members commit to implementing and maintaining specific security measures and following CBP best practices before being accepted into the program.
Key Benefits of CTPAT Membership:
- Reduced wait times at the border
- Fewer CBP cargo examinations
- Assignment of a Supply Chain Security Specialist to the company
- Access to Free and Secure Trade (FAST) Lanes at land borders
- Availability of additional security and supply chain training for staff
- Priority consideration at CBP’s Centers of Excellence and Expertise
- Potential reciprocal benefits from foreign Customs administrations through Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with the U.S.
Membership in the CTPAT program enables improved federal oversight of international freight and logistics activities while enhancing the security and efficiency of member organizations’ freight processes.
