Harmonized Tariff Schedule
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) of the United States sets out and regulates all tariff rates and statistical categories for imported merchandise and is published by the US International Trade Commission (ITC). Based on the International Harmonized System used worldwide by members of the World Customs Organization (WCO), the HTS uses HS (Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System) codes to classify goods for customs purposes.
The HS code has six digits, broken down into three sections relating to the chapter, heading, and subheading, in the HS nomenclature used to classify goods. Bridging from HS codes are HTS codes, which can range from 8 to 10 digits. The first six digits are the HS code for the import, with the following digits being codes for the countries of import, which are set out in the schedule.
Using the correct HTS code for goods that you wish to bring into the US, you can generate an estimate for any customs duties you will need to pay based on the type of merchandise and the country of origin.
