Export Control Classification Number
An Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) is a five-digit code used by the U.S. Department of Commerce. This code is applied to exports subject to export control restrictions to determine the legal status of a product intended for export and whether an export license is required from the Department of Commerce.
An ECCN relates to the Commerce Control List (CCL), with the first digit categorizing a product into one of the ten CCL categories based on its nature. These categories include nuclear materials, electronics, and microorganisms, among others.
An ECCN is important for international trade but is also required for processes such as packaging the product for international shipping and bringing a product into controlled areas, such as a military base.
An ECCN is not required for every type of export. Instead, if a product intended for export falls under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) and is listed in the Commerce Control List, an ECCN is required.
