CASE STUDY
Parts Dictionary Improves Efficiency & Compliance
An importer of products related to the retail industry sought a way to better control their vast catalog of parts that would allow faster classification and greater compliance in using the same classifications consistently with the same part numbers.
Client
An importer of products related to the retail industry.
Challenge
The client worked with a Customs broker for many years, who, due to their institutional knowledge, was familiar with their products. However, a year of exceptionally high turnover led to a loss of institutional knowledge and a significant drop in classification consistency. As a result, they sought a way to better control their vast catalog of parts that would allow faster classification and greater compliance in using the same classifications consistently with the same part numbers.
Solution
J.M. Rodgers worked with our client to review their entire book of parts and assign classifications according to the rules outlined in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). JMR’s team of brokers then created a comprehensive parts dictionary, a database of all the client’s parts, including information on their nature and classification. JMR provided training to the client that allowed them to maintain the parts dictionary and empowered them to file compliantly and manage their inventory and products more proficiently.
Results
The client benefited from increasing their entry times by more than 50% and reducing classification errors to nearly zero. The parts dictionary that J.M. Rodgers created helped ensure consistent practices and standards of work for all of the customer’s import classification needs.
